About
Prof. Mohamed Rela is the Director and Head of the Institute of Liver diseases and Transplantation, Global Hospitals Group, India and Professor of Liver Surgery and Transplantation, Kings College Hospital, London.
Prof. Rela was born in Kiliyanur village near Mayiladuthurai. He had his schooling from the Kalakshetra School, Chennai and obtained his MBBS and MS degrees from Stanley Medical College. He went to the United Kingdom in 1986, received an MS from Edinburgh and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1988.
Prof. Mohamed Rela worked in various hospitals in UK before joining London's Prestigious King's College Hospital, Europe's renowned Liver Transplant Center in 1991. He pioneered the split liver transplantation technique and has performed the largest number of auxiliary liver transplantation. While his expertise in the field of hepatobiliary surgery such as Whipple's surgery for pancreatic malignancy and liver resection for Hepatocellular carcinoma and Cholangio carcinoma is well-recognised, his primary area of interest is Pediatric Liver Transplantation. In 1997, his team at Kings College, London carried out liver transplantation for a five day old girl, a feat which earned Prof. Rela a place in the Guinness Book of Records 2000.

More than 3000 liver transplants have been performed by Prof. Rela and throughout his distinguished career, he has dedicated his work to increasing the availability of liver transplantation to patients. In September 2009, a team led by him successfully carried out the split liver transplantation (first of its kind in India), at the Global Hospital, Chennai. The liver was split during the retrieval operation into a smaller left lobe for transplanting a young girl and a larger right lobe for transplanting an older woman with end stage liver disease. The young girl received the left lobe as an auxiliary liver transplant for Criggler najar syndrome- another first of its kind in India. In May 2011, a team led by him successfully performed Swap liver transplantation on adults (first of its kind in India), at Global Hospitals & Health city, Chennai. The Global Hospitals group under his stewardship has carried out over 200 transplants last year and continues to grow.

Prof. Mohamed Rela is an avid researcher. His research interest is in the field of liver regeneration and harnessing its potential in making liver surgery safer for liver donors, liver recipients and for patients with advanced liver tumors. He has more than 260 publications to his credit in peer reviewed journals, has presented in numerous meetings and conferences and has delivered over 100 invited lectures.
He has a keen interest in teaching and has been organising the annual Master Class in Liver Disease at Chennai, India since 2011. This has now become the only such platform for training young clinicians in the field of liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery in the country.
