He completed his MBBS from Medical College, Shimla and did his MS in General Surgery as well as M Ch. Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery from PGIMER, Chandigarh. Subsequently, he worked as faculty at Medical College, Shimla and PGIMER, Chandigarh and later at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow as Additional Professor. He has performed more than 27,000 surgeries ranging from neonates to geriatric patient with excellent results. He is a keen academician and has numerous publications in various national and international journals. He is advisor to the Editorial Boards of prestigious journals and is conducting various international trials. He has received various national and international awards for his distinguished work in the field of Cardio Vascular Surgery.

Previous experience:
Dr Mahant worked as faculty at Medical College, Shimla and PGIMER, Chandigarh and later at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow as Additional Professor. He went overseas for fellowships at prestigious Cardiac Centers like Dunedin Hospital and Green Lane Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand, St. Vincents Hospital, Sydney, Australia, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia and was staff specialist at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia. He subsequently joined university of Birmingham, Alabama USA as special Cardio Vascular fellow. In 1996 he joined Batra Hospital and Medical Research Institute New Delhi as Chief Surgeon before joining Fortis Healthcare. He is among the pioneers of Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery for Complex Congenital Heart Defects program in India and initiated the first Coronary Bypass at PGIMER and SGPGI, Lucknow. He also established the neonatal pediatric surgery programme at SGPGI, Lucknow. He has performed more than 27,000 surgeries ranging from neonates to geriatric patient with excellent results.
